Pre-America

Filling up much of my personal time reading. Many years ago Eric of YTC and now Wet Asphalt and I had a minimal argument on the pro's and con's of the pre-european cultures in the America's. Most notably the Aztecs if my memory serves me right.
His was an argument that the Aztec culture was in no way inferior to the Spanish culture and that given a few more decades the native Americans would not have succumb to European colonization.

My most convincing argument was that this would have been impossible since they had little immunity to European diseases and that alone struck them down. I had other arguments based on the fact that aside from the Inca, that all of the civilizations were tribal and as such the "lesser tribes" would have sided with the Europeans if only prove that they sided with a more powerful tribe... tribalism being what it is. I also mentioned something about the fact that the Aztecs were steeped in ritual human sacrifice so much so that when anyone with a brain compared what the Spaniards offered to what the local elite offered, I was sure they would pick the Spanish dominion. That particular comment brought gnashing of the teeth. I think it somewhat was thought by Eric that this was "Christian propaganda" and was all lies. Maybe I am wrong about that as the discussion was some time ago.

Today, as I was reading and searching on such material I came upon this:

http://gatesofvienna.blogspot.com/2010/01/return-of-quetzalcoatl-chapter-7.html#readfurther

Basically this provides the documentation of "Christians" at the time correlated with modern archeological finds. I suppose that the Maya and Aztec of the here and now have plenty to be proud of - and they do - but to pretend that these horrors didn't happen does not give any justice to their ancestors who suffered through this vile tribal compact.

Just so anyone reading this knows, I am aware of the fact that this Spanish dude seems to be a bigot at the very least. I link these issues because I find it interesting that I never see these facts in any current historical accounts. For instance, I recently read 1491 which was a wonderful read but it only vaguely pointed to the daily life of those tribal nations and "empires".
It did not make the read less interesting in any regard, I just find the mute button of historical analysis interesting.
